"Horrific black comedy...devastating...delirious."-Chicago Reader
When her domineering father collapses of a heart attack during their vacation in Rome, virginal spinster Martha (Margit Carstensen, The Bitter Tears Of Petra von Kant) encounters the man of her dreams, the sadistic engineer Helmut (Karlheinz Bohm, Peeping Tom). Their marriage soon becomes a chamber piece of matrimonial terror.
Featuring brilliant performances and the spectacular camerawork of long-time collaborator Michael Ballhaus (GoodFellas, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Gangs Of New York), Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film inhabits it's own dark world, teetering deliriously between jet-black comedy and psychological horror story.
