When all he has left is determination and courage, a man must fight to save his family.

In this sincere and poignant drama, music legend Johnny cash portrays Jesse Hallam, a Kentucky coal miner whose wife suddenly dies leaving Jesse alone to care for their two children. when it is discovered that his daughter needs a critical operation, Jesse sells his homestead to pay for the surgery and moves his family to Cincinnati. But the proud man has been hiding a shameful secret. Jesse Hallam cannot read or write. At home in Kentucky, it had only been an embarrassing inconvenience to Jesse, but in the big city, his illiteracy becomes a major handicap. Jesse is reluctant to confront the problem until his kindly employer Sal Galucci convinces him to seek help from Galucci's daughter Marion, who also happens to be the assistant principal at the high school attended by Jesse's son Tully. Living in the city has alienated the boy, who yearns to return to Muhlenberg County. As Tully continues to drift away from his family emotionally, Jesse realizes the harsh truth... his son is illiterate too.
