Adapted for the screen by Mart Crowley from his own groundbreaking play of the same name, The Boys in the Band is a pivotal landmark in the history of gay cinema - as well as in the early career of celebrated director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection). The film follows Michael, who is throwing a birthday party for his friend Harold and has drafted a collection of other close gay friends to help commemorate the event. As the evening progresses, the alcohol flows and the knives soon come out. When Michael demands that the group participate in a devious telephone game, dormant and unspoken emotions are soon unleashed. Often regarded as one of the first films from a major studio to explicitly feature openly gay characters, The Boys in the Band turned a spotlight on characters that many moviegoers had never seen prior. An essential queer cinema classic, the film has now been restored in 4K for the first time ever.
