Anna Moffo in Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata
The role of Violetta in La Traviata is one of which Verdi might well have composed with Anna Moffo in mind. Possessing a singular beauty of voice and appearance, the soprano succeeds brilliantly in fulfilling the composer's difficult musical and dramatic demands. It is especially fortunate that Miss Moffo's celebrated portrayal has been captured in Mario Lanfranchi's cinematic treatment, a sumptuously beautiful and emotionally powerful film. Asked about her own reaction to this Traviata, Miss Moffo had this to say:
"In making this film version of La Traviata, I particularly enjoyed the chance to project the character of Violetta through subtleties of facial expression which the camera captures in such detail. The biggest thrill in watching the film again was that, with those cinematic close-ups, I could really look into Violetta's eyes and see what she was thinking. It reminds me of the Italian saying, 'Gl' occhi sono lo specchio dell 'anima' - The eyes are the mirror of the soul."
