Lady For A Day
May Robson plays Apple Annie in Frank Capra's wonderful and enduring comedy drama based on a short story "Madame La Gimp" by Damon Runyan, with a hilarious and heartwarming script by Robert Riskin. Apple Annie has a daughter, Louise (Jean Parker), who was raised in a Spanish convent, and believes her mother is a society matron who lives in a fashionable New York hotel. When Louise announces that she plans to visit her mother to introduce her aristocratic fiance, Apple Annie's friends and customers, including lovable gangster Dave the Dude (Warren William), Judge Henry D. Blake (Guy Kibbee) and Missouri Martin (Glenda Farrell) rally around to transform her from a poor street peddler into the elegant lady her daughter is expecting to see.
Lady For A Day was Frank Capra's breakout film and was nominated for four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Director). It is one of the best of Capra's early films and was a huge box office success in its day.
