Director Dirk Simon tells the true story of two border guards: Ulrich Steinhauer and Egon Bunge. Both had been drafted in the East German army and posted on the Berlin Wall to guard the East-West border from people trying to cross illegally.
On November 4th, 1980, during patrol, Bunge escaped into West Berlin and in the process shot his comrade and official partner, Corporal Steinhaurer. Was it murder or an act of self-defense? Filmmaker Simon portrays the personal turmoil and emotions of the two men; Steinhaurer, whose life was cut short, and Bunge, whose remaining years were filled with the horrid guilt of both killer and survivor of a brutal political regime.
