I went into The Golden Compass "sight-unseen," meaning not only hadn't I read any of Philip Pullman's novels, but I didn't even have the foggiest clue what the books were about. My only knowledge going into the film was that many religious groups have been in a fervor about both the movie and the novels, because they supposedly support an atheist agenda.
