Synopsis
It's theiyear 2022...People are still theisame. They'll do anythingito get what they need. And they need Soylent Green.

Soylent Green is landmark screen science-fiction, a riveting entertainment and a cautionary tale that holds a mirror to a tomorrow rife with ecological disaster.

Working well again in the futuristic genre following Planet Of the Apes and The Omega Man, action titan Charlton Heston portrays Thorn, a detective prowling the dark streets of a polluted, overpopulated Big Apple gone rotten in 2022. He's trailing a murderer-and the trail leads to a stunning discovery. Vividly realized, Soylent Green's world gains its power not just from its social effects but from its heart-a human dimension magnified by the performance of legendary Edward G. Robinson in his moving screen farewell.

A world of the brink of ecological disaster - 4 out of 5  (8/5/2003)
The early seventies saw the beginnings of the environmental movement here in the United States. The first Earth Day, a celebration of the environment, was held in Central Park in 1970. Of course, Hollywood, never slow to jump on a trend, began to invest in ecological themed films. Perhaps one of the most famous is Soylent Green, released in 1973. Set in 2022 it shows a desolate world where man's ignorance of the ecology has resulted in disaster. The air is dark and polluted, food is in short sup   more >>

Disappointing - 2.25 out of 5  (9/11/2003)
This movie video looks and sounds like it was transfered from a VHS tape. With a glacial plot, stiff acting, no sound track, and low production values, this movie is as dated as the light jazz that is heard ocassionally in the background. The imaginative use of props to create a runaway greenhouse/overpopulation effect can not save this film. Nor can a reasonable performance by Charlton Heston. Definitely a rent before buying candidate.   more >>
