Sydney (Philip Baker Hall - Psycho) is a poker-faced professional gambler with a soft heart for a hard luck story. He plays guardian angel to unlucky John (John C. Reilly - The Thin Red Line) and a hooker, Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow - Shakespeare In Love), whom he grows to love like family. When John's and Clementine's honeymoon night leads to a disastrous hostage situation, Sydney takes care of it, as usual. But when slick casino pro Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) threatens to reveal a secret from Sydney's past that could destroy his relationship with the newlyweds, Sydney decides to hedge his bets and not leave anything to chance.

Take a gamble on this flick! - 4.5 out of 5 (5/22/2003)
One of the interesting things about DVD is that we occasionally get to see where we've been and what we've missed.
I just watched the movie "Hard Eight" on the advice of a friend.
A friend whose judgement I trust very much.
And rightfully so!
"Hard Eight" was the first feature film from Writer/Director Paul Thomas Anderson. That name might ring a bell as the guy who gave us such classics as "Boogie Nights" and the soon to arrive, "Magnolia."

SYDNEY: BETTER KNOWN AS HARD EIGHT - 5 out of 5 (12/6/2001)
For those who are Paul Thomas Anderson fans, as I am, you know that PTA refers to this film as Sydney, as will I throughout this review. Sydney is a brillant film, its easy, nothing big, nothing complicated, just a script, great actors, and a camera with a bunch of people behind it. Thats all PTA needs and its great. The story has brillant twists, I love John C. Reily as well as Philip Baker Hall. Gweynth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson are also great. Sydney is more then film, it's art, it's grea

Not for everyone, but brilliant - 5 out of 5 (2/25/2000)
I laughed when i saw the second trailer included on this DVD. It was a pacy, funky, collection of all the higlights of the film, making it appear to be another groovy, Tarantino inspired gangster flick... and it was soooo wrong for the film.... this film is slow, really slow. If you're in a hyper mood, don't watch it. I was ultra chilled out the first time i saw it and got totally sucked in by it. The story of an aged gambler, Sydney, helping a young loser, John, who falls for a hooker hardly so

HEARTACHE - 4.5 out of 5 (1/31/2000)
I would have liked to write here than HARD EIGHT, the first movie of director P.T. Anderson, is a masterpiece and already contains the germs of his next effort BOOGIE NIGHTS.
I would have been delighted to praise the unusual description of Las Vegas's underworld and the friendship of an old timer for a young loser.
I would have loved to tell you that the entire cast gives a performance that will linger in my mind for a long time.
But I can't. Because HARD EIGHT is a one-legged movie. It
