a decent love story - 4 out of 5 (3/26/2001)
"Altered States" is one of those movies that you will really enjoy more if
you don't think about it too much. The film was written by Paddy Chayefsky
and directed by Ken Russell. With this knowledge, it's easy to see why
critics all over the world embraced the film as a visionary one. It's
dynamic special effects and dazzling array of imagery makes it a film that
demands being seen more than once. The joke however is that the real focus

Weird Scenes Inside the Professor's Mind - 4.25 out of 5 (1/15/1999)
Paddy Chayefsky, author of the novel on which this
movie is based, sued to have his name removed from the
project. I've read the book, and I don't understand
Chayefksy's objections; this is a fairly faithful
adaptation. The plot may be silly in some respects
but it is the same plot as in the novel.
Despite some awkward lapses in logic and some pretentiousness,
this is one of my favorite films. William Hurt's
performance as the scientist in search of the ultimate truth

A thought provoking film - 4.5 out of 5 (1/5/1999)
This film made me think about possibilities I'd never even imagined. William Hurt's film debut is a totally enthralling, mystical, semi-sci fi journey to realms of thought that are staggering in their implications. I won't spoil the story for those o you who have not seen the film, but needless to say, it has bold concepts to tease your mind with.
