A crew rebels against their ship's captain - 4 out of 5 (7/21/2003)
There seems to be a growing trend with movies for a film to try to foray into multiple genres. Usually the results are drastic; the plot tries too hard to be more than it ever should have aspired to. One film that succeeds where so many have failed is now almost fifty years old, The Caine Mutiny. Part romance, part war film and part courtroom drama this film holds its own with most of these genres. Bogie Best Performance?? - 3.75 out of 5 (6/7/2001)
Humphrey Bogart usually played one of two types of characters - tough and mean or tough and smooth. In The Caine Mutiny he's neither. Bogie gives a tour de force performance as a navy commander who has finally reached his breaking point. This once fine officer has been reduced to a paranoid wreck of a man who walks on the edge of sanity, all the while being responsible for the lives of hundreds of sailors. MAD COWARD / HEROIC MADMAN - 4 out of 5 (3/1/1999)
I really think that Humphrey Bogart is one of the best actors of movie history and, in my opinion, THE CAINE MUTINY is the film to see if one does want to have an idea of the wide possibilities Bogie had. You have to admire him in the role of Queeg, a character "à la De Niro", playing an officer whose mental health is to be questioned.
