"Daring, Erotic, Touching." -Los Angeles Herald-Examiner
A blockbuster debut feature from director Donna Deitch (Criminal Passion), this "refreshingly lively and poignant" (The Hollywood Reporter) drama, written for the screen by Natalie Cooper, is based on Jane Rule's cult classic novel Desert of the Heart -- a soulful portrayal of relationships between women. With standout performances from Helen Shaver (The Color Of Money) and Patricia Charbonneau (Kiss The Sky), this compelling film is "luminous, tender and memorable" (Update).
Leaving behind a loveless 12-year marriage, stressed-out and fed-up university professor Vivian Bell (Shaver) travels to Reno, Nevada, in search of new adventures. And when wild-card casino cash-girl Cay Rivvers (Charbonneau) takes a shine to her...it changes her life. But as Vivian succumbs to Cay's spell of carefree living, she wonders whether a mismatched pair of hearts could ever become two of a kind in a high-stakes game of love.

Vivian Bell, played by Canadian actress Helen Shaver, is an elegant Columbia University professor who travels to Reno, Nevada, to get a divorce in the 1950's. She must establish a Nevada residence and moves into a guest ranch run by Frances (Audra Lindley). Cay, a tomboy with a direct confrontational attitude played by newcomer Patricia Charbonneau, immediately falls in love with t

A beautiful adaptation of a sensitive literary classic - 3.75 out of 5 (2/3/2001)
This film is adapted from Jane Rule's beautiful novel Desert of the Heart. Anyone who knows this book will know it for its characters and the film captures the veiled emotions, tensions and conflict beautifully without a vast Hollywood budget. I had misgivings about the capacity of film to do this: the novel is narrated largely by Evelyn (Vivian, in the film) in which her character is gradually revealed, whereas the film dispenses with narration; but for a debut film, Donna Deitch (dir)has
