A strange day in the lives on interconnected people - 5 out of 5 (10/26/2002)
Ever since Robert Altman released Nashville in 1975 there has been a trend towards movies with large central casts and multiple story lines. Rarely is this format executed properly. They characters are not properly developed, the story lines get muddled and the film fails to hold together. Fortunately, the latest opus by Boogie Nights director/writer Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia, does not fall into this trap. It may take you a couple of viewing to really get the underlying theme in this film.

A Rare flower indeed! - 4.25 out of 5 (7/24/2000)
At first glance, "Magnolia" seems to be a rambling mosaic of stories intertwined to no center conclusion. However, Director, Paul Thomas Anderson manages to weave the stories together to a point where all nine of the stories converge into a powerful movie.
The critics were mostly unanimous about the film, and they all agreed on one thing: That the film has one of the most powerful ensemble casts ever assembled in one film. Such Anderson favorites as William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, Philip

An engaging slice of life with unexpected surprises. - 4.25 out of 5 (9/29/2001)
Characters who seem real although far from likeable or lovable are always more interesting than stereotypes. Except for the P.S. Hoffman character, the movie is full of those types and it works. In addition, ever since Short Cuts, I've enjoyed directors who can succesfully weave characters and scenes into a whole. Hey, there's even a box office airhead who shows he can act in this one! Thumbs down to Cruise for his scene with Robards, but both thumbs way way up to his performance during the

the best film of 1999. - 4.75 out of 5 (7/29/2001)
paul thomas anderson crafts together another masterpiece (the first one being Boogie Nights). Magnolia has an outstanding cast. William H. Macy is always better than average, new-comer Jeremy Blackman is a delight to watch in a film full of stars like Cruise, Moore and Hoffman. If you haven't seen this yet, you must.

Wonderful movie, even better DVD. - 5 out of 5 (4/1/2001)
Magnolia is one of the best films to come out in a while. The direction of Paul Thomas Anderson and a great ensamble cast makes this film a must have for any film fan. The performance of Tom Cruise is the best performance of his career. He should have recieved the Oscar, but was robbed once again. Everything about this movie is great, and the DVD just adds to its greatness. The documentary is very informative in the making of the movie. The Frank TJ Mackey seminar is truly sensational and
