Synopsis
"A mesmerizing masterpiece of theiunexpected!" -David Sheehan, CBS-TV

Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett electrify the screen in this riveting thriller from Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella (The English Patient). Matt Damon "gives one of the year's most extraordinary performances" (Premiere) as Tom Ripley, a calculating young man who believes it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. Opportunity knocks in the form of a wealthy American shipbuilder who hires Tom to travel to Italy to bring back his playboy son, Dickie (Law). Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend (Paltrow), plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.

"It is better to be a fake somebody, than a real nobody." These words are at the very heart of "The Talented Mr. Ripley." The film is based on a novel written in 1955 by Patricia Highsmith and the novel was considered racy for it's time. Years later, the film finally made it onto the big screen in a society that is considerably more open-minded. "Silence of the Lambs" taught us to love the anti-hero and that genesis is also a large part of why this film succeeds in wrapping up the vie   more >>

Shockingly Good - 4.5 out of 5  (8/2/2001)
When I first saw the trailers for this movie, I was drawn to the great actors and scenery, but thought: pretty, but another predictable scary, freaky person movie a la the stepfather and single white female, to name the best of the genre. Okay, so I was really wrong on this one. While it is dark, the script of this thriller takes us places I never would have guessed, and most importantly makes you care about Tom Ripley, even as you're repulsed by him. I'd dare to say this movie bests hitchcoc   more >>
