"An Amazing Film Of Oceanic Power!" -Chicago Tribune
When Bess, a naïve young woman, marries Jan, a handsome oil-rig worker, she experiences passion and physical pleasure that she never imagined. Their bliss is cut short when an accident on the rig leaves Jan paralyzed. Believing he will never make love to Bess again, he tells her to take other lovers, convincing her that this will help his recovery. Bess is sent spiraling into a world of dark emotions she cannot understand.
Remarkable performances by Emily Watson, Katrin Cartlidge and Stellan Skarsgard leave an incredible impression on your heart.

Great movie, lacking extras - 3.5 out of 5 (9/30/2000)
This is kind of hard of a hard disc to judge. Since the movie was shot on such grainy film stock, I'm sure some people will complain about the quality of the image (and it not being anamorphic), but that's how it is.
Same goes with audio. Since this is part of that Dogma movement, the sound is kept bare bones, with nothing to fancy to show off your home sound system.
Regardless, this is one of the best movies of the 1990's, and it's nice just to see it out on the format.

Nice to have on dvd, BUT... - 3.25 out of 5 (7/31/2000)
Until we can get the extended International version of this film that was released on Criterion laser a few years back, this bare-bones dvd will have to do. As much as I want the longer cut to be released, this is a decent disc that will suffice if you have been waiting like me just to have it on dvd!
The transfer is framed in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio (incorrectly noted as 1.85 on the package and here on the website!) in a non-anamorphic transfer. The image is surprisingly sharp and t
