The Most Controversial Film of thei20th Century isinow theimost controversial film of thei21st Century.
Caligula may very well be the most controversial film in history. Only one movie dares to show the perversion behind Imperial Rome, and that movie is Caligula, the epic story of Rome's mad emperor. All the details of his cruel, bizarre reign are revealed right here: His unholy sexual passion for his sister, his marriage to Rome's most infamous prostitute, his fiendishly inventive means of disposing those who would opposse him, and more.
The combined talents of cinematic giants Malcom McDowell, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud and shakespearean actress Helen Mirren, along with an acclaimed international cast and a bevy of beautiful Penthouse Pets, make this unique historical drama a masterwork of the screen.
Not for the squeamish, not for the prudish, Caligula will shock and arouse you as it reveals the deviance and decadence beneath the surface of the grandeur that once was Rome.

It's good to be the king! - 3.25 out of 5 (3/27/2000)
"Caligula" has got quite a reputation to live up to.
The film is recognized as the most expensive pornographic film ever made. Penthouse magazine publisher Bob Guccione spent obscene amounts of money on this piece of garbage. Nobody knows the exact total spent on the film because it was never released to the public.
The same almost could be said of the movie.
Guccione had his heart in the right place. He took an epic saga of an Emperor going mad, He got Gore Vidal to

Historical? Yes. Disturbing? Yes. Real? Probably. - 3.5 out of 5 (2/27/2007)
I am amazed at the comments regarding this movie that state "if you want something historical, watch the History Channel..." This is historical, folks.
Caligula, a psychopathic megalomaniac who happened to also be Emperor of the Roman Empire was real. His heinous crimes are well documented. Guccione is probably the only human being on earth with guts enough to portray the historically sound goings on in Caligula's world, the sex, orgies, his incestuous relationship with hi

Glory of Rome? - 3.5 out of 5 (6/14/2006)
Try to sit through this movie without getting a little squeamish or turning your head and I applaud you. The Emperor Caligula was indeed a sadistic and cruel man and this movie probably depicts his true character and what it must have been like in those times. Still, the movie is very well done and is worth seeing. Malcom McDowell is superb as Caligula, and the rest of the cast carries the movie well.

Caesar Commands You to Buy This Movie - 5 out of 5 (11/30/2005)
Caligula is a terrific movie, riddled with gratuitous sex, over the top violence, and has the unique distinction of being perhaps the only NC-17 adult movie in history to feature a multi- Academy Award nominated cast. If Caligula is as horrible as some ignorant reviewers claim, why is this DVD such a best seller? Why is Caligula so popular over 25 years after its theatrical release?
Caligula may not be an accurate account of the late Roman emperor gone irretrievably mad,
