The Only Thing More Dngerous Than Death.. Is Survival.
In the untamed wilderness along Alaska's coast, feelings and fortunes change as quickly as the tides in this haunting and hypnotic thriller, from critically acclaimed director John Sayles. Traumatized by a boat accident at sea many years before, Joe Gastineau has given up his hopes for a life beyond the odd jobs he takes to support himself.
That quickly changes when Donna deAngelo, bar singer and nomad, and her troubled teen-age daughter, Noelle, enter Joe's life. Both mother and daughter fall for Joe, increasing the already present friction between them. The tension continues to build when Joe captains his ship on a mysterious sea voyage up the Alaskan coast, only discovering after it's too late that the trip may end up costing them their lives.

SAYLES SAILS AWAY - 4.5 out of 5 (1/25/2000)
John Sayles's LIMBO was presented last year at the Cannes Film Festival and ignored by the international critics. So, if you don't live in Paris, France or in the U.S.A., the only way to view this picture is to buy the DVD that Columbia Tri-Star have just launched in the market. Furthermore, you will have, as a bonus feature, a commentary of director John Sayles. And that's a hell of a bonus !
As always, John Sayles's screenplay is way over the average Hollywood screenplays we have to bear a

Oscar worthy performances in a truly great film... - 4.5 out of 5 (12/2/1999)
John Sayles is one of the few really independent filmmakers left, and one of my favorite writer/directors.
He makes the movie that he wants, no compromises, and usually they turn out to be really damn good.
With Limbo, he made one of the best films of 1999.
As usual, the performances are top-notch. David Strathairn has always been one of my favorite character acters; here he gets to finally show his excellent, albeit low-key, acting skills with the lead role here.
