"A fairy taleifor adults! A splendid motion picture!" -Georgia Brown, Village Voice
A young couple's stormy romance scandalizes English society in this acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen's classic love story.
Amanda Root and Ciarin Hinds of the Royal Shakespeare Company are the star-crossed lovers, Anne and Wentworth, whose passion is thwarted by a scheming socialite. Eight years later, when Anne is considered an old maid and her once-rich family is on the verge of bankruptcy, Wentworth returns. Will their second chance at love be ruined by the social conventions that destroyed it once? Or will the heart be persuaded by rules of its own? Adding flirtatious fun to Austen's irresistible romance, Persuasion "takes your breathe away! A dazzling five-star feast. If you adored 'A Room With A View'...then you'll cherish Persuasion."

Another Very Successful Jane Austen Film - 4 out of 5 (7/22/2001)
All of Jane Austen's works are littered with witty observations and well developed characters, which is why they transfer to both television and movies so well. Persuasion is no exception, in fact I like it even more than Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility (both of which were first rate). Roger Michell (Notting Hill) directed, Amanda Root plays Anne Elliot,Ciaran Hinds is Captain Wentworth, and Susan Fleetwood is Lady Russell. All of these actors are extremely convincing, but I think So

The BEST of the Jane Austen Film Adaptations - 3.5 out of 5 (10/23/2000)
Don't be fooled by the silly synopsis on the video box -- this is pure, perfect Jane Austen made visible. Nobody writes better dialogue than Austen, and nearly every word in the film comes straight from the text. The actors are invariably superb. Stupid, vain Sir Walter Elliot will make you laugh out loud, Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds) is a manly-man dreamboat, and Anne Elliot (Amanda Root), growing gradually more confident and pretty as the story progresses, is beautiful to watch. Every character is
