The reason for that is the casting of a real musician and singer in the role of Buddy Holly- Gary Busey. The authenticity that it brings is almost as good as having the real thing. Not only the lead though, the Crickets are played by real actors/musicians as well. Since I play drums and dabble in guitar, I always look for inconsistencies and fakery in these types of films.
