You Can Go There Even Though It Doesn't Exist
The barriers that separate fantasy from reality are shattered in this stylish, mind-jarring thriller, where two parallel worlds collide in a paroxysm of deception, madness and murder.
On the thirteenth floor of a corporate tower, high-tech visionary Douglas Hall and his high-strung colleague Whitney have opened the door to an amazing virtual world - circa 1937 Los Angeles. But when the powerful leader of their secret project is discovered slashed to death, Hall himself becomes the prime suspect. Arriving from Paris is the beautiful and mysterious Jane Fuller claiming to be the murdered victim's daughter. Her instant, magnetic attraction to Hall only further blurs the lines of what is real. Is he the killer? Is the inscrutable Jane somehow connected? To find the answers, Hall must cross the boundaries into the simulating reality he has helped create - and confront the astonishing truth of his own existence.

A film best left in the basement. - 3.25 out of 5 (10/19/1999)
Rarely does a movie come around that can take a well-used theme and make something fresh from it. Unfortunately, Thirteenth Floor is unable to do this. This movie has very little going for it, which is a shame since it has some potential. The plot, as it is, is simple, a murder mystery that spans the real world and a computer generated virtual world. Most of the characters therefore play two roles when they seem barely able to handle just one. The waste here is the actors are normally very good.

One of my favs - 4 out of 5 (8/9/2002)
Yep, I own this, like this and have watched it several times. After Thirteenth Floor, my order of preference is Gattica, Dark City and eXistenZ all of which I own....absent is Matrix which I rented once and have no desire to repeat. IMHO all of the above are better SF/mystery types compared to Matrix; unless you just want loud action...of which there are also many better examples than Matrix...

13th Floor.........Just go up there ............ - 4 out of 5 (2/27/2000)
This film is more like Matrix but without guns,karates....It is a so-so movie that goes in between today and 1930 Los Angeles...
But what disturbs me is that you dont really understan what the hell is going on...You don understand what happened.....You dont understan whether you are in 1930 or now...This is the main problem of the movie....It is is too involved and deep .....It has no eye catching effects as Matrix...Main character was seemed that he could not even understand the role he is pla

Glad I took it back before actually buying it. - 2.75 out of 5 (12/10/1999)
I first purchased this movie but keep it for two weeks and never opened it. For some strange reason, I returned it for a refund. Then I rented it and viewed it last night. It was a little too deep for me, and I'm glad I took it back before actually buying it.
