The most underrated movie of 2005. - 4.5 out of 5 (11/14/2005)
I have no shame in admitting that I love this movie. It is a big, fun, gory, stylish slasher film, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Is it a perfect movie? Not necessarily. This movie is a testament to what strong direction can do. The script is admittedly pedestrian. But the directing, editing, and production design is so solid, it lifts the film above its trappings. Another pointless remake... - 2.75 out of 5 (11/14/2005)
While "House of Wax" is never as awful as I expected, it ends up just being mediocre as a pointless horror installment with all the usual characters, and pretty bad acting all around. While Serra does manage to show some sick and beautiful imagery, and it can tend to be entertaining in some respects, it's a shame a logical compelling story couldn't have been told, instead of watching pretty WB stars run for their lives. Give me the original any day!
