Dorothy is back at home in Kansas after her first escapade in the land of Oz and unable to convince anyone that her adventures truly happened. Concerned, Auntie Em takes Dorothy to the doctor, who plans to treat her with shock therapy.
While trying to escape the therapy, Dorothy and her now talking pet chicken, Bellina, are propelled by a lightening storm back to Oz. But things are not as she left them. The Emerald City is under the rule of the evil Princess Mombi and the fiendish Nome King. The yellow brick road is broken, the city is a dirty slum and her friends, the Cowardly Lion and Tin Man have been turned to stone.
It is up to Dorothy and her new friends Tik Tok, a helpful robot, Jack, who has a pumpkin head, and Gump to save Oz. Join Dorothy on her excitng new adventures in her "Return to Oz."

One of the most misunderstood films of the 1980s, Disney's RETURN TO OZ has resurfaced after years of unavailability on home video. Though critics and audiences alike initially regarded the picture with attitudes ranging from ambivalence to outright hostility, it is now often considered a well crafted, highly imaginative piece of fantasy filmmaking, and Anchor Bay's recent DVD release offers us our best opportunity yet to decide this issue for ourselves.

Anchor Bay does it again with Return To Oz - 4.5 out of 5 (10/2/1999)
I loved to watch Return to Oz whenever it was on TV. Now I have this great DVD and now I can watch it whenever I liked. Thanks to many sites, I finally figured out my infactuation with Ms. Fairuza Balk. It seems that no matter which movie she was in, I could watch it. Now I know why.
The video image is awesome considering it came from Disney sources. Some speckle and aging are visible but this was made in 1985 and Disney did not do a remastered print for Anchor Bay. The sound is also top notch

The picture quality is really good, the beginning of the movie has quite a few specks from the original film elements, but that clears up quickly. In fact, I was surprised by how good the picture is considering the year of the film - 1985, the dreaded 80's - but the colors look right on, neither over nor under saturated. It has decent contrast, although some of the darker scenes early in the movie are a bit grainy.
