Ed Pekurny (McConaughey) is just a regular guy who feels he has nothing to lose by agreeing to be a star of a new reality-based TV show. Almost overnight, the program becomes a hit, and suddenly this goofy but engaging video clerk is a national celebrity! Everything's fabulous..until Ed falls head-over-heels for Shari (Elfman), the girlfriend of his brother Ray(Woody Harrelson). A decent film! - 4.25 out of 5 (3/2/2000)
It happens quite often in Hollywood. Two screenwriters get the same idea and make virtually the same movie. When this occurs, usually a studio will race to get its product out to market first so that it may leave the other in the dust. This usually works.
It definately worked with "EDTV." Paramount raced out and beat them with the similarly themed "Truman Show" and it royally trounced ED both critically and financially.
It's a shame because they really aren't the same movie

Great movie that has nothing to live up to. - 4.75 out of 5 (8/24/1999)
Audiences who don't see this because they think it is like the Truman Show are Wrong, and missing out. This is a great enternaining romantic comedy that brings up some very good issues. The middle of the movie gets a little slow but this is still a wonderfully made film.
UNIVERSAL COLLECTOR"S EDITION, enough said (it's LOADED). Excellent audio and video quality as well.
This is one to buy.

The "ED" Show........... - 5 out of 5 (8/24/1999)
If there's any reason why "EDtv" failed in theaters, it can be summed up in three words, The Truman Show. Audiences suspected a ripoff of that film, which is no doubt a greater film by comparison, but "EDtv" is not the same kind of movie and is in fact one of the year's best comedies.
True TV is what you could call the "Real Life" network. The network producer (Ellen Degeneres, in a very funny performance), reports that ratings are so low, that people would rather watch The Gardening Channel.
