2001: A Space Odyssey is a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite. It is a dazzling, Academy Award winning visual achievement, a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. It may be the masterwork of director Stanley Kubrick and it will likely excite, inspire and enthrall for generations. To begin his voyage into the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman into uncharted realms of space, perhaps even into immortality. Open the pod bay door, Hal. Let the awe and mystery of a journey unlike any other begin.

"Open the DVD Disc Door, HAL." - 3.75 out of 5 (9/24/2000)
"Open the DVD Disc Door, HAL."
A brilliant masterpiece, or a tedious journey to nowhere? It's hard to be ambivalent about 2001: A Space Odyssey, as some viewers think it is slow, pointless and confusing; while others believe it is one of the best, if not the best, science fiction movie ever made. While I don't fall into the group who worship Kubrick's presentation as the best thing put on celluloid since its creation, I do like the movie quite a bit, and have never thou

Stunning Picture For Stunning Visual Effects - 3.75 out of 5 (5/9/2000)
I'm glad that today I found one of the last copies of this in the original MGM packaging, because truthfully I didn't want to pick this DVD up in Warners packaging. I identify 2001 so much as part of the rich MGM history that to me, it should be in MGM packaging (in the same vein, I'm not looking forward to when Ben-Hur gets released in Warners packaging). Having said that, I have to confess that my appreciation of 2001 is solely for its visual delights. As someone who thinks Kubrick and Cl

A journey into space..... - 3.25 out of 5 (3/18/2000)
This movie is concerned with intelligence as the division between animal and human, then asks a question; what is the next division?
Technology is treated as irrelevant to the quest literally serving as mere vehicles for the human crew, and as a shell for the immature HAL entity. Story told as a montage of impressions, music and impressive and careful attention to subliminal detail. A very influential film and still a class act, even after 25 years.
It really has a good versus evil plot, fi
