James Coburn and Nick Nolte, along with Sissy Spacek and Willem Dafoe star in this emotionally captivating film. Harrowing portrait of the legacy of male violence and alcoholism - 4 out of 5 (11/30/1999)
Paul Schrader's faithful screen adaption of Russell Banks's outstanding novel. Wade Whitehouse, a small town sheriff is forced to confront the family demons during the investigation of a hunting accident during which he believes a murder has been committed. The strain of the investigation along with the strain of his failing personal life combine to push him back into confrontation with his abusive, alcoholic father.
This is a very good quality DVD, which nicely shows of Schrader's style

Adapted from a novel of Russell Banks, AFFLICTION is the last movie to date of screenwriter and director Paul Schrader. This talented writer has been the author of such great screenplays as Brian De Palma's OBSESSION or Martin Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL. He has also been the inspired director of CAT PEOPLE and HARDCORE. So don't expect here a one and only dimension movie. We are in the company of one of the men who made the Hollywood of the last twenty years.

A powerhouse of acting. - 3.5 out of 5 (7/25/1999)
Nick Nolte was thought by most to be the front runner for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for last year. I found it interesting that the factor most working against him seemed to be the report that most Academy members were not making it all the way through their screening copies of the movie, finding the film just too depressing. When I read that, I thought, "Wow, I have to see this movie."
Both Nolte and James Coburn definitely deserved the accolades they received for their work in this
