Morty Fineman. Artist. Visionary. Madman.
In the hilarious comedy, The Independent, Morty Fineman (Jerry Stiller) is a washed up filmmaker who specializes in films with bombs, babes, and a "message." He is halfway through filming on his latest masterpiece - an ode to cleavage and assisted suicide appropriately titled Ms. Kevorkian - when he runs out of money.
Morty enlists his estranged daughter Paloma (Janeane Garofalo) and assistant Ivan (Max Perlich) to help save his film company. His daughter suggests he sell his films (all 427 of them) to the foreclosing bank. Morty has a better plan - make the one movie he knows CANNOT fail: the biography of an infamous serial killer... as a musical.
The Independent is chock full of riotous clips from many of Monty's classic films. Who could forget the cautionary herpes film The Simplex Complex or the tender romance The Foxy Chocolate Robot? Stiller and Garofalo are joined by an uproarious supporting cast including Ben Stiller, Ron Howard, Johnny Rotten, Andy Dick, Ginger Lynn and Peter Bogdanovich.
