Come in if you dare. The opening-night gala for a new exhibit at Chicago's Natural History Museum is under way, but be advised: something terrifying wants to make sure no one ever leaves. This effects-packed shocker gives haunted house movies a new setting, and the non-human star, brought to life by "Jurassic Park" Academy Award-winner Stan Winston, is something no creature fan can let slip by.

this is why I avoid museums! - 3.25 out of 5 (2/19/2001)
I watched "The Relic" for the first time in a theater some years ago with a
ton of critics surrounding me. As I walked out, I listened to them tear it
apart. I chose to keep my mouth shut about how I liked the film for fear
that the mob might turn angry and attack me with Bic pens and Spiral
notebooks.
You might laugh (or you might not!) but the thought of getting endless
paper cuts as well as being insulted with words I didn't even understand
scared me at the time. (Of course, I've al

A RELIC on my shelf - 2.5 out of 5 (6/18/1999)
It isn't on of my picks! I was waiting to see this on DVD and I was disappointed. It came and went quickly from the theaters and I like to see movies at home anyway. I was hoping for good horror film and I felt like I got a second rate sci-fi. Well, enough on that.
I wasn't impressed with the transfer. Most of the movie, as with many horror films, are filmed with limited lighting. I didn't feel the picture was as sharp or clear as it should have been. There was little contrast in the s

Unfairly panned and wonderfully entertaining scare fest..... - 4 out of 5 (5/31/1999)
As far as horror/monster films go, either they work, or they suck big time. "The Relic" for me succeeds on it's primary level, though it wasn't too big of hit with critics, many audiences, and was only a modest box office success. We've seen this kinda of plot before, but it isn't about what the story's about, but rather how skillfully crafted it's made. The director of this film, Peter Hyams, knows how to create a creepy atmosphere. He works as his own cinematographer, and is very good in shoot

Great monster movie....not so great DVD. - 3.5 out of 5 (5/10/1999)
I am a big Relic fan. To me, this is one of the best monster movies in recent years. I could not wait for it to come to DVD. When it finally arrived, it left a bitter-sweet taste in my mouth. What an awful video transfer, so black, undetailed, and not crisp at all. The menu is obsolete by today's standards. Only one theatrical trailer! Very dissapointing! Not cheap either. On the plus side, it has very good sound ,but not great. It is amazing how Paramount has decided not to produce quality DVDs
