The search for happiness connects lonely lives in this subversively funny new film from Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse). Meet three sisters at the center of a struggle with the secret demons of middle class perfection. There's Joy, who is rebounding from a break-up with her latest loser boyfriend; Helen, a glamorous writer looking for drama in a relationship with a slovenly obscene phone caller; and then there's Trish, the housewife who appears to have it all, including a shrink husband who has a secret obsession which he manages to hide from his family and friends.

Happiness...anything but. But don't let that stop you. - 2.5 out of 5 (9/4/2001)
In this black comedy by Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse) we find ourselves following the lives of characters which are both extraordinarily absurd, and average at the same time.
The story follows the lives of three sisters, Joy, Helen, and Trish. Joy is the "blacksheep" of the family who still lives at home and hasn't quite found her way in the world, especially when it comes to meeting Mr. Right. Helen, is an up and coming author, who finds herself and her writing lacking in su

Great movie, great transfer, no extras - 3.5 out of 5 (5/13/2001)
On the surface Happiness appears to be a disgustingly pessemistic look at human life, but upon further examination it is actually a deep, thought provoking, and utterly honest view on our existence. Todd Solondz holds nothing back in this film, much like his previous critically acclaimed film "Welcome to the Dollhouse."
Happiness at its core is the story of a family struggling to find some sort of comfort and release from a cold uncaring world. They each find this comfort in vastly varying f

A Bold Look at the Other Side of Humanity - 5 out of 5 (2/16/2000)
This film wholly deserves all the rewards it was given. It is a bold look at the everyday issues of humanity that Hollywood chooses to pretend does not exist. It doesn't glorify murder and sadism (which seems to be popular), but rather it realistically shows how these issues exist beneath the surface. Granted this is not a picture for the timid (or even the remotely timid), it does introduce the audience to a very real set of characters which are difficult to forget. If you're tired of

A Disturbing Film - 3 out of 5 (10/24/1999)
This is a very well-written and well-acted film, but although it appears at first to be a comedy, it's hardly that. Any film that deals with pedophilia in a direct and realistic manner can't really be funny. Many people will find this picture offensive; I have to admit that parts of it were very difficult for me to watch. Much of it is emotionally shattering. Not a comfortable picture, although it does contain some humor, perhaps just the right amount.
Almost all films that deal with child
