Synopsis
The Greatest Survival Story Of All Time.

Disc One:
Defeated in his quest to become the first man to reach the South Pole, the British explorer Ernest Shackleton decides to cross the Antarctic continent. But with World War I looming and key financial backers skeptical of his plan, the mission is fraught with difficulties from the outset.

After finally obtaining funding, a ship - the Endurance - and crew, the expedition departs. Just days short of the Antarctic coast the Endurance becomes trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea. All efforts to free it fail, and the crew is forced to wait for warmer weather.

Based on the detailed diaries and first-person accounts of expedition members, Shackleton is the true story of the greatest adventure from the age of polar exploration. Written and directed by Charles Sturridge (Longitude, Brideshead Revisited), this A&E Original Movie stars Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Hamlet) as the legendary explorer.

Disc Two:
After ten months in the ice, the Endurance is finally crushed and sinks. Castaway on the floes with three small boats and what supplies they could salvage and carry, the crew drifts for another five months before finally landing on the uninhabited outcrop of Elephant Island.

Their only hope for survival is to sail to the Stromness whaling station on South Georgia Island. With five other men. Shackleton successfully makes the 800-mile journey across some of the world's most dangerous waters. But a final challenge remains before rescue can be arranged - trekking 22 miles across the island's mountainous, uncharted interior to Stromness.

Disc Three:
The Making of Shackleton - Go behind the scenes with Kenneth Branagh, director Charles Sturridge, and the rest of the cast and crew as they endure five weeks of dangerous shooting on the floes off Greenland. Like the Endurance itself, their Norwegian icebreaking ship (and base of operations) became trapped in the ice, and crewmembers actually had to carry shotguns to ward off polar bears!

Biography®: Ernest Shackleton - A&E's landmark series sheds new light on the life and adventures of the legendary polar explorer whose leadership style has been embraced by 21st-century companies worldwide.

Antarctica: A Frozen History - From its discovery in 1773 by Captain Cook to the extraordinary expeditions led by men like Robert Scott, Ernest Shackleton, and Raold Amundsen, The History Channel® Chronicles the epic adventures at the bottom of the world, while a visit to Antarctica today captures the continent's savage beauty and undiminished danger.
