Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children--Chas, Richie and Margot, and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Wes Anderson's hilarious, touching, and brilliantly stylized study of melancholy and redemption.

Surprisingly touching. Gwyneth Paltrow kisses another girl. - 4.25 out of 5 (12/23/2002)
I originally wasn't very interested in this movie when I saw the trailer in theaters. Gene Hackman plays a dying rich guy (Royal Tenenbaum) who wants to re-establish a relationship with his estranged family before he departs.
Although most of his family despises him, Royal is actually the most warm and loving character in the film. Anjelica Huston plays a wonderful and heartfelt role as his ex-wife. And Danny Glover appears as a subdued and honorable accountant who courts - and eventually

Surprisingly interesting! - 4.5 out of 5 (10/30/2002)
I don't have a lot more to add to the other opinions, but one thing about this movie is it made me think. This is the only movie I ever recall laughing out loud to when someone gets stabbed. You'll have to watch it to appreciate it.

Enjoyable movie - 4 out of 5 (7/14/2002)
Great movie, great cast. Hackman should have received at least an Oscar nomination for this one - one of his better movies in the last 10 years!!!. There are meant to be outtakes on this 2 disk set but I did not see any which is why the DVD feature is marked as average
