Mean but still good - 4.25 out of 5 (5/22/2003)
SHALLOW HAL is the latest movie from the brothers Farrelly; Bobby and Peter and the movie is something of a mixed bag.
If you recall, this film was to be the first big break out role for Jack Black who has stolen the show in so many other films, and in the film he was teamed with the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow who was to be his lady love.
The joke however is that Hal is hypnotized into thinking Rosemary (Paltrow) is a beautiful, thin woman when the truth is something quite the opposite.

Despite 2 or 3 yuks, this one sucks - 3.25 out of 5 (7/26/2002)
The Farrelly's mix of idiot-humour, wimpy-pop-music, genetic freaks, and goofy-sentimentality is getting old. For a one-joke movie, this one goes on forever. "Shallow Hal" is painfully uneven, not to mention boring. Get back to basics, boys: Toilet humor, without the cry-baby finale. I like my sh#t jokes with no-strings-attached.

Much Better Than I Expected! - 4.5 out of 5 (7/5/2002)
I was surprised when my wife wanted to see this movie. She didn't like Dumb & Dumber or There's Something About Mary (two of the Farrelly brothers' past movies, which I loved), but she is big fan of Gweneth Paltrow (aha)!
I wasn't expecting much, but this film was actually quite entertaining. The script was well written and engaging, the fat jokes were crude (and hurtful), but Gweneth (especially when she was skinny) made the movie quite touching.
Shallow Hal (played wonder
