"A Gripping andiStylish Thriller." -Lou Lumenick, New York Post
While Jack the Ripper ruled the streets of London, terror reigned. His crimes were unspeakable. His blood lust, unquenchable. His identity, unknown... until now! Johnny Depp and Heather Graham are riveting in this "engrossing, stylish thriller" (People Magazine). Directed by the Hughes Brothers (Dead Presidents, Menace II Society), From Hell "grips tighter than a chokehold and cuts as deep as a knife." (The Washington Post)

The Jack the Ripper story like you have never seen before - 4.75 out of 5 (5/19/2002)
Serial killers have become a common topic for the writers in Hollywood. In recent years there has never been a shortage of these deranged people to use as fodder for storylines. The grandfather of all serial killers is without a doubt Jack the Ripper. Striking in a ghetto of London in the year 1888 his brutal, ritualistic murder of prostitutes made all the headlines then and continues to fascinate people into the new millennium. This latest entry into the myth of the Ripper is a 'cut' above its

A disc from a deal with the devil? - 5 out of 5 (4/27/2002)
FROM HELL got its start as a graphic novel (which is a fancy word for a big thick comic book) written by Alan Moore and drawn by Eddie Campbell.
But to use the term comic in any sense with FROM HELL is a crime of monumental proportions. The book is as well written as any modern version of true crime (and better than most) with an endless supply of quotations and notations that tell the story behind Moore's vision.
In short, it is a piece of art and the movie is no less so.

Could have been better - 4.5 out of 5 (2/16/2004)
As a thriller, this movie was pretty decent. Jonny Depp (as usual) steals every scene in this movie. He really is becoming one of Hollywood's rising stars. The look of the film is quite unique and adds to the drama of the movie.
Now for the bad parts. Most people who watch this film will not realize that this movie/story is a true story. Jack the Ripper actually existed! These crimes and the way they happened actually happened! Unfortunatley, the film does not convey that to the audience, leadi

An intelligent film- does this solve The Ripper mystery? - 5 out of 5 (6/8/2002)
An amazing movie that wasn't the runaway hit it should have been. Maybe it's because the ending isn't typical Hollywood fluff. Or people were looking for a slasher film without a soul. This is an interesting slant on the Ripper story but the hit of the film was Johnny Depp, Heather Graham and the incredible feel of Whitehall in London before the turn of the Century. Misery, class society, squalor and trapped souls in a purgatory of society's making are all perfectly depicted. The only negative
