America Was Born In The Streets
This motion picture event from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese earned 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, along with 5 Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Song! Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic), Cameron Diaz (Charlie's Angels) and Daniel Day-Lewis (The Boxer) star in this epic tale of vengeance and survival! As waves of immigrants swell the population of New York, lawlessness and corruption thrive in lower Manhattan's Five Points section. After years of incarceration, young Irish immigrant Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) returns seeking revenge against the rival gang leader (Day-Lewis) who killed his father. But Amsterdam's personal vendetta becomes part of the gang warfare that erupts as he and his fellow Irishmen fight to carve a place for themselves in their newly adopted homeland!

The draft riots of NYC come to life with this gripping drama - 4.75 out of 5 (7/1/2003)
When I first heard about the film 'Gangs of New York' three factors drew my interest; I'm of Irish descent, I've lived in New York City most of my life and I have always enjoyed the films of Martin Scorsese. With all of this I held great anticipation for this film, I was not disappointed. The story takes place during the mid-nineteenth century in a turbulent neighborhood of lower Manhattan called the Five Points. This was an area where only the most desperate of people would dare to live. Many I

Great movie, shitty DVD edition! - 4.25 out of 5 (6/30/2003)
GANGS OF NEW YORK is a beautiful film to look at, but it's difficult to understand!
The whispered stories have Director Martin Scorcese setting a running time for over five hours. The stories also say that he originally conceived the project in 1978 and planned to use the rock band "The Clash" in the lead roles.
Now, I'm not sure any of that is pertinent, but it does make matters worse by boggling the mind with the concept of a five-hour movie starring a rock band that really don't have

Forget what you've heard... - 5 out of 5 (3/1/2004)
Forget all the award nominations, mixed critical reviews, and typically underappreciative opinions of the standard viewer. This movie is truly a treat for those of us that care to watch great films and to think about them afterwards. Note, that does not include those so called cniephiles that might have a great track record on known classics but still think Scorsese lost his touch after Goodfellas. This is a great film and I am fully confidant that it will be regarded as such in time. Just let t

Bad movie. - 3.5 out of 5 (7/8/2003)
I know a lot of people love this movie, but I thought it was just so sloppy, so cliched, and so unfocused. What was the story? It could have been told in less than two hours, as opposed to pushing three.
Leonardo DiCaprio and the usually reliable Cameron Diaz are useless here. They do... nothing. I find that shocking, considering that Leo is playing the main role.
But, it is Daniel Day-Lewis who made the movie worthwhile. He gives one of the top two performances of the year (number 1 being

Great film! Good dvd! - 4.75 out of 5 (7/7/2003)
I saw Gangs of New York when it was in theaters and I absolutely loved it! Another great film from director Martin Scorsese. The only complaint I have about this dvd is that the actual film was split up onto two discs when the movie itself could've fit onto one disc (Braveheart is longer and it fit onto one disc) and all of the extras could've been on the second disc. That is why I took a point away from the dvd features field. Other than that, this is a great dvd that should be added to everyon
