Jack at his best - 4.25 out of 5 (5/22/2003)
If film were spoken of in art terms, then Alexander Payne would best be described as a minimalist filmmaker.
ABOUT SCHMIDT which is his latest movie is a perfect example. The colors are drab, the scenes are drawn out and the camera tends to focus on one thing for two long in the hopes that something will happen. It rarely does, but that's the joy of ABOUT SCHMIDT.
Payne also succeeds where many others have failed. He reigns in Jack Nicholson and Jack gives the performance of a lifetime as

The most boring Jack Nicholson movie I’ve ever seen! - 3.5 out of 5 (7/7/2003)
About Schmidt is like sleeping peacefully - and then waking up in a very bad dream. Warren R. Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) retires and soon discovers that his wife has gotten old, that his accomplishments at work were fleeting, that his daughter doesn't respect him (or need him), and that the jerk she's about to marry is an even bigger moron than he suspected and there's absolutely nothing he can do about it!
