A compulsive gambler who can't win andican't quit.
James Caan portrays a compulsive gambler who can't quit or win. He falls into debt to the mob for $40,000 but seems to relish the thrill of gambling against the long shot. As a professor of literature at New York university, he is in over his head, until his mother gives him some money which he quickly tries to increase in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the odds never allow him to win or fully recover, so his future is in the mob's hands. Caan and girlfriend Lauren Hutton are a sexy duo, and Caan aptly plays the risk-taker as a man with no future.

THE GAMBLER (1974) - 1.75 out of 5 (9/29/2002)
James Caan took advantage of his popularity with THE GODFATHER (1972)
and kept doing gritty films and taking risks. Karel Reisz's THE GAMBLER (1974) is a still-bold, if not always successful portrait of a university professor (Caan) who has a remarkable addiction to games of chance and the thrill and excitement it gives him.
It is not like his life is so bad he has nothing better going for him.
He has a decent family, a pretty girlfriend (Lauren Hutton), friends, a good reputation, persona

accurate portrayal of a gambling addict - 3.25 out of 5 (6/24/2003)
This film shows the problems compulsive gamblers get themselves into. Caan's character is satisfied only when he has the risk of the bet, winning is not the point of the gambling. A good lesson for those who think they can handle the pressure of full time betting

A very good and realistic film about the traps of gambling. - 3.5 out of 5 (6/23/2003)
I have watched this film on many occassions as it truly is a masterpiece of cinema. James Caan plays the gambler, and he plays the part with the style and realism that only true gamblers relate to. The feeling of when you are on a losing streak, it is just so damned as near impossible to escape from. The end of the film is exceptional, few gamblers dare venture into that kind of territory for kicks, but Caan is a true gambler. Bravo!! Bravo!!
