Empire Review My Big Fat Greek Gushing Review - 3.75 out of 5  (2/14/2003) 2002 was a great year for weddings. Well especially one wedding in particular. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING became the most successful independent film ever produced edging out Blair Witch Project by a healthy margin. And all of that came from very humble beginnings. The film was originally conceived as a one-woman show by writer/star Nia Vardalos who gave a copy of the script to Rita Wilson.
