From fortune 500...to fortune's fool.
Acclaimed actor/writer/director Mel Brooks (Spaceballs, The Producers) takes his hilarious brand of comic lunacy to the streets-literally-with this "warmhearted comedy" (Roger Ebert) about a rich man who wins back his humanity...by losing everything else he's got!
Multi-billionaire Goddard Bold (Brooks) has just made a deal that will change his life. In order to win the right to build over a ghetto, Bolt must survive on its impoverished streets-penniless-for 30 days. but when this well-to-do man discovers what its like to do without, it'll take the charity of a feisty bag lady (Leslie Ann Warren) and a newly found appreciation for the best things in life to show him the true meaning of being "filthy rich"!

But perhaps it wasn't all his fault because the movie is nowhere near as bad as most critics would have you believe, nor did it deserve the meager box office returns that it ultimately got. I still wouldn't rank this film on par with a BLAZING SADDLES of HISTORY OF THE WORLD but I would have to say I liked it better than SPACEBALLS.

If you like Mel Brooks, you'll be okay with this one - 3.5 out of 5 (8/5/2003)
This film received somewhat unfair press. Easy to see why - critics ran it against your average comedy, regardless of the fact that Mel Brooks tends to appeal to his own audience (quite aside from Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs, of course). If you like Mel Brooks, this film, though not a world-beater, is loaded with little Brooks-isms that had me creased up from time to time.
Worthy of note, the scene near the close with two demolition trucks fighting each other like something out of Fant
