The most important thingiin life isishowing up.
Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane and D.B. Sweeney score in this uplifting story of triumph over adversity that "hits an emotional home run."
Conor O'Neill (Reeves) is a down-on-his-luck gambler in debt to dangerous loan sharks. Desperate for cash, Conor reluctantly takes a job coaching a youth baseball team. The "team" turns out to be a ragtag group of tough-talking kids from Chicago's inner city. Secretly, Conor plans to desert the team after he wins a big bet. But the stakes are higher than Conor imagined: The kids need someone to believe in. As Conor wrestles with his past, the kids start to teach him some lessons that will forever change his future - that responsibility and trust must be earned and hope can appear in the most unlikely places.

Better than the bears - 4 out of 5 (2/6/2002)
It would be very easy to dismiss HARDBALL as another rip-off of THE BAD NEWS BEARS.
It features a lot of similar elements. There is the ne'er do well leader who is forced to coach because of a financial crisis. There are also some similar members of the team; we have a large whiny kid, as well as a loudmouthed runt who fights his way out of every situation. To complete the package, there is also a star player who has to be coerced into playing and a pitcher who pitches to their own style of

I loved this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 4 out of 5 (3/1/2002)
This film hits a very surprising emotional note, and it's very effective. Keanu Reeves is great, no surprise there, and so is Diane Lane and those terrific kids!!!!!
Also, D.B. Sweeney plays a scum-bag coach of a rival team, which was good for me because I hate him anyway.
Great fun, always great to watch, and has a surprising amount of extras considering: 1.) It's from Paramount, and 2.) It's not a Collector's Edition.
Buy it today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
