Double-Disc Set
Poetic realism reaches sublime heights with Children of Paradise (Les enfants du paradis), the ineffably witty tale of a woman loved by four different men. Deftly entwining theater, literature, music, and design, director Marcel Carne and screenwriter Jacques Prevert resurrect the tumultuous world of 19th-Century Paris, teeming with hucksters and aristocrats, thieves and courtesans, pimps and seers. The Criterion Collection is proud to present this milestone of cinema in a new high-definition film transfer made from the restored negative.

CHILDREN OF PARADISE - 3.25 out of 5 (4/13/2002)
One of the French Cinema's early triumph's is the poetic and visually

Occupied France, so the achievement is even more remarkable. That is
what delayed its release until 1945.
This double-DVD set is Criterion's fin

Amazing in all respects - 4.5 out of 5 (7/7/2005)
You can truly enjoy this without first knowing in what conditions the movie was made. It is a wonderful historical peek into the 19th century arts with amazing acting and storytelling. The viewer becomes so absorbed that French becomes your second language. Watch the extras and listen to the commentary to understand why this is considered a masterpiece. Be prepared for the emotional impact and heartbreak.

One Frances Greatest Films - 5 out of 5 (4/28/2002)
Les Enfants Du Paradis was voted as the number 1 French movie of the 20th Century. In some quarters it is known as Frances "Gone With The Wind", a reference to the film's overall quality and greatness (although the content is vastly different). I hadn't seen this masterpiece before I ordered it from DVD Empire - the fact that it is a Criterion DVD was a major reason, the other being a love of all things French. The restoration of and packaging is first rate, as are the voice overs giving us the fa
