One family's struggleifor survival,ifor justice,ifor freedom.
One of the most acclaimed films of the year, An American Rhapsody is based on the true story of a young girl's unforgettable journey of self-discovery.
Persecuted by an oppressive Communist government, a Hungarian couple (Nastassja Kinski and Tony Goldwyn) makes a daring flight for freedom. The escape is successful, but comes at an unthinkable price - the couple's baby girl, Suzanne, is left behind. Six years later, Suzanne is uprooted from the loving care of her Hungarian foster parents and reunited with her mother and father in California. She is awed by her new modern lifestyle and wonderful discoveries such as TV, boys and rock and roll. But as she grows, so do the questions about her mysterious past and heritage. Feeling lost and alienated, the teenaged Suzanne (Scarlett Johansson) returns to Hungary, embarking on a personal search that reveals some shocking secrets... and the true meaning of family, freedom and home.

childhood memories does not add up to CINEMA - 2.75 out of 5 (9/8/2003)
The fact that there are/were political upheavals, people are forced from their homes and have to make a new start far from their familiar territory etc,etc could be a good theme for a film. But it did not happen here. It is one of the antifilms, bad script, bad directing a bad thing. Only hungarians should watch, maybe they will be ...moved, but for reasons not connected to cinematography.

Heartfelt, moving and true - a wonderful film. - 5 out of 5 (6/2/2002)
A magical movie. I discovered this under-reviewed and limited released gem through the filmography of Scarlett Johansson (The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World). So at the outset I bought it because Scarlett was in the movie. Imagine my surprise when I was almost disappointed Scarlett's character entered the movie as the older Suzanne replacing the younger Suzanne (6 years old) , Kelly Endresz Baniaki, an extraordinary young talent . It is said that directors should avoid casting children and anim
