Festivities turn fatal when obscene phone calls break the serenity and it becomes clear that a psychopath is stalking the house. Predating Halloween and Friday the 13th by several years, Black Christmas effectively laid the groundwork for murder thrillers that would follow with its clever interplay of tension, shocks - and humor. Producer/director Bob Clark earned his reputation as a hitmaker for the first two Porky's and the celebrated Sherlock Holmes caper, Murder by Decree. Ironically, after bringing us the terror of Black Christmas, Clark went on to take a lighter look at the holidays with the hilarious film, A Christmas Story. Empire Review Ho-ho-ho horror film - 3.5 out of 5  (11/1/2001) BLACK CHRISTMAS is the kind of film that fans of HALLOWEEN should check out. It lacks the same amount of gore that the latter film does, but it more than makes up for it in terms of suspense. Filmed in 1974 in Canada, the movie is also know by alternate titles SILENT NIGHT EVIL NIGHT and STRANGER IN THE HOUSE. Only one other time have I seen a movie capture the amount of suspense and terror that "Black Christmas" does. That was with Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", also released in 1974. "Black Christmas" opens with an ominous figure lurking outside a sorority house.
