Nominated For 8 Academy Awards®
In one of his most legendary films, director David Lynch chronicles the intense emotional journey of a complex, lonely man and the dedicated surgeon who changed his life. John Merrick (John Hurt) was born with a horribly disfiguring congenital disease, and suffered the humiliation of being a sideshow freak. Only when London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon) rescues him does Merrick begin to regain the life of dignity and respect that everyone deserves.
Based on a true story, the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated film has earned its place in cinematic history. Anne Bancroft, John Giegud and Wendy Hiller lend moving performances to an already powerful story. Visually fascinating and historically relevant, Lynch has created a haunting masterpiece of compassion, beauty and ultimately, humanity.

A moving Film - 3.75 out of 5 (1/4/2002)
The ELEPHANT MAN tells the sad and true story of John Merrick, a man cursed
with a rare disease, which trapped a beautiful spirit in the body of a
hideous monster.
The story has been with us for years. It has been a successful Broadway
play, the subject of several books and there is also the chilling footnote
as to what happened to the original bones, which were on display for years.
(Michael Jackson tried to purchase them, and honestly I don't know if this
was successful, nor do I car

A Beautiful and Historical Film! - 3.75 out of 5 (2/16/2004)
For those of you who have been living under a rock for your entire life, this story is true! John Merrick (The Elephant Man) really did exist. That fact alone should draw interest to this film. Then add the fabulous performances by John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins to the mix and you have one great film! Almost everything in this film from lighting, the black & white print, the acting and make-up are top quality! Be prepared, though. This is a truly sad story a real man. It's a tear-jerker.

A Touching and Brilliant Film - 5 out of 5 (2/1/2002)
First of all The Elephant Man DVD was produced without the scene access option at the request of David Lynch. For what reason I have no idea, he strikes me as a very strange person and it shows in his films, but he is also quite a brilliant director as well as he continues to write and direct the most unique films I have ever seen. For example see Mulholland Drive, his latest effort, its is really out there but very very good upon repeated viewings. He is probably one of the best directors worki

My last Paramount DVD Purchase - 3 out of 5 (12/13/2001)
This is an excellent movie. Probably David Lynch's best film.
This is also the worst DVD I've ever purchased. Dig it: I own Plan 9 From Outer Space, it has scene access, The Elephant Man has NO SCENE ACCESS! This is the only DVD I've ever purchased without scene access. If you love the movie, and want to own a really beautiful print, buy the DVD used.
