In Notorious, a brilliant allegory of love and betrayal, Hitchcock fuses two of his favorite elements: suspense and romance. A beautiful woman with a tainted past (Ingrid Bergman) is enlisted by American agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on a ring of Nazis in post-war Rio. Her espionage work becomes life-threatening after she marries the most debonair of the Nazi ring, Alex (Claude Rains). Only Devlin can rescue her, but to do so he must face his role in her desperate situation and acknowledge that he's loved her all along. Stunning performances, Ben Hecht's excellent script, and Hitchcock's direction at its best make Notorious a perfect film.

NOTORIOUS (CRITERION COLLECTION) - 3.25 out of 5 (12/16/2001)
Alfred Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS (1946) is considered one of his best films by many, but I have to question to what extent it is a Hitchcock film. Sure, his personality and themes are strong here (as usual,) but this is a picture haunted by both Michael Curtiz's CASABLANCA (1942) and features a few atypically romantic elements that can be attributed to a stronger-than-usual (personality-wise) Ben Hecht script.
Like CASABLANCA, the female lead is Ingrid Bergman, who had also just appeared in Hitch

Great Film - Awful DVD - 3.5 out of 5 (11/12/2001)
Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Notorious, deserves a great DVD.
Anchor Bay distributed this movie with, shall we say a few flaws. O.k., so we'll wait for the promising 'Criterion Collection' edition.
In a polite word, Criterion's version is visually 'inferior'. The Anchor Bay edition had a couple skips and jumps, during the film, however, the picture quality was first rate.
Every dual layer of the the Criterion disc is loaded with dust particles and GRAIN. I thought that visibl
