It's a fantasy! - 4.75 out of 5 (10/3/2001)
FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN is a new breed of film. I'm sure there
aren't many left out there who don't know that the film is made up of
characters that are entirely computer animated, but the level of animation
is something that speaks of a new generation of filmmakers.
The film took a year and a half to make and every second of that time
shows. Every nuance of movement looks real, from the facial expressions to
the movement of the hair on the characters.
Now, I have to be ho

Technical masterpiece, Writing disaster - 2.75 out of 5 (7/22/2003)
This film absolutely raised the bar to an all new level for all animation studios. The incredible quality of the computer graphics in this film were hyped in the industry for years while it was being made, and it well lived up to all that hype and exceeded it!
Sadly, fairly early into the movie it became painfully evident that their resources went into the CG development, and they put very little into the actual writing of the story. No matter how good the visuals, how advanced the technology

Fantastic visuals pulled down by lackluster plot. - 3.75 out of 5 (3/5/2003)
Final Fantasy is, quite simply, one of the best looking films out there. If the filmmakers had only spent a fraction of the effort on the story as they did on the visuals, then this could have been a great film. Character development is minimal, relying on tired cliches instead of real character emotion. The plot, while simple in its broad strokes, suffocates within tedious details that are only superficially explained at best. Still, the film is worth watching for the stunning 3D work.

Warning, does not play in Multicode-DVD players !!! - 4.5 out of 5 (10/3/2002)
Great movie but from over 800 US DVD's I have so far, this is the only one which check your DVD player if it is a fix code 1 or a multicode player. Good thing I have a US X-Box which can play DVD code 1 only, so it worked. There should be a warning about this nasty protection as in USA are over 200.000 multicode DVD player sold every year.
The movie is very well done and a must to have !. Make sure you have a DVD code 1 only player :)
