THE FRENCH CONNECTION - 3.75 out of 5 (11/11/2001)
Director William Friedkin put himself on the map with THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971), beginning one of the most prolific careers in film, especially American film. The low-budget film project was trusted to him, in part, because of his skills as a documentarian and the film reflects that.

This is NOT a rose-coloured view of New York City. Bleak. Gloomy. Wonderful. The first time I saw this film I was bored and disgusted by it's "heroes" tactics. Terrific New York winter cop movie - 4.5 out of 5 (12/23/2001)
The print is rich and the sound excellent. Good sound during the great chase scene and the extras even include a BBC documentary on the picture. Rare sounds in a film include that of the mechanical device that unscrews tire lugs. How often is that heard? Roy Scheider plays Hackman's sidekick and looks real as a cop, a part he's played often. The real Eddie Egan does a nice turn as Hackman's boss. More sounds of authenticity include that riveting, rumbling sound made when tires pass over some of
