Mickey Mantle andiRoger Maris. Why did America have roomiin its heartifor only one hero?
One was the Yankees' best loved player, the other was their most valuable. In the summer of 1961, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle took on Babe Ruth's record, the 1927 single-season 60 home run slam. It would be a summer that no one who loves baseball will ever forget.
In 1961, Mickey Mantle is a Yankee favorite. The smiling sun god of the season, a hit with fans and sports writers alike and natural heir to his predecessors Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Also at bat is a young Midwesterner, Roger Maris. A hard-hitting right fielder, Maris is Mantle's opposite in almost every way. Quiet and soft-spoken, he doesn't add up to everything a sports legend should be, and finds himself losing the support of the fans when he refuses to try.
As the summer of 1961 unfolds, both Maris and Mantle find themselves approaching Babe Ruth's benchmark of 60 home runs. Facing mounting pressure from the media and the stands, they both know there's only room for one winner. The people make their choice known. But the people's favorite isn't the favorite to win.

great film - 4.5 out of 5 (9/10/2001)
Most of the talk about baseball now a days is about the homerun record that Barry Bonds is fast approaching. The homerun record is one of baseballs greats records that stood for many years, never thought to be breakable. However, in one great year (1998) two men challenged the record for the elusive 61. As Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire chased towards history they brought America back to the game that once captivated the American public and brought back the history of one of the greatest players of

Accurate Historical Account of a Hero - 5 out of 5 (7/12/2004)
I bought this for my father for christmas this past year, and watched it with him. This is one Long movie. I was really impressed with the way it kept his attention (Generally he just sleeps through movies). He commented on how historically accurate it was, and how much he loved the movie. For any baseball historical enthusiast, I'd Recommend it.

Billy Crystal's Best Film - 4.75 out of 5 (2/3/2003)
Billy Crystal should always be taken with a grain of salt. His movies are extreme, in the sense that none of them are mediocre. Among the handful of his excellent films, 61* is possibly the best. Billy sets his comedy schtick aside and returns to his roots, to Yankee baseball, his lifelong passion. Billy's love for the sport is clearly evident in 61*. As director, you can tell from watching this baseball tour de force, that Mr. Crystal has paid careful attention to every conceivable detail; from

Heroes In Pinstripes - 4.75 out of 5 (12/16/2001)
I love baseball, even in a country (Netherlands) where baseball isn't a popular sport. I grew up watching the Mets and the Yanks. My heart belongs to the Mets but i love the yanks as well. With exception of the movie "Baseball: Film by Ken Burns" this is the best movie about the game of games. Billy Christal directs a great movie that incorporates everything baseball is and will be. This is a Must-Have for every true baseball fan. I it was up to me, this movie would get around 8 oscars includin
