"The most triumphant war movie since 'Saving Private Ryan'." -Amy Longsdorf, Gannett Newspapers
An all-star cast lights up the screen in this riveting epic hailed as "a vivid dramatization of one of history's titanic turning points." (Gene Shalit, TODAY)
The year is 1942 and the Nazis are cutting a deadly swath through Russia. Under the leadership of Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins), the citizens of Stalingrad are mounting a brave resistance, spurred by the exploits of their local hero, Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law). An expert sniper, Vassili's deeds have become legendary - thanks to propaganda produced by Vassili's best friend, a political officer named Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). To stop Vassili, the Germans dispatch their best sniper, Major Konig (Ed Harris), to Stalingrad. When Vassili and Danilov both fall in love with a beautiful soldier (Rachel Weisz), Danilov deserts his friend, leaving Vassili to face his German counterpart alone. As the city burns, Vassili and Konig begin a cunning game of cat and mouse, waging a private war for courage, honor and country.

Excellent War MOvie - 5 out of 5 (10/8/2001)
Enemy at the Gates is the "Saving Private Ryan" of the eastern front. An epic story of the struggle between the powerful, overconfident armies of Nazi Germany, and the war-weary legions of the Red Army. Vassili Zaitsev, the famous Russian Sniper in the battle (Jude Law) must not only fight to defend his homeland, he must also fight to defend himself against the elite German sharpshooter Maj. König (Ed Harris). Playing excellent supporting roles are Joseph Feinnes who plays Political Officer D

War movie combined with a "chick flick" - 4 out of 5 (10/8/2001)
This movie will grab hold of you and not let go. It is a "inside story" of a Russian sniper during the Nazi seige of Stalingrad. It also has a minor romantic subplot which plays out nicely with the overall story.
I did have some male friends, who are die-hard, don't mix a war movie with a "chick flick" types, who felt that the film needed "more action." I,however, disagree with this appraisal.

The Russian Version of Saving Private Ryan - 4.5 out of 5 (9/22/2001)
Think of this film -- in its intensity and visual imagery -- as the Russian version of Saving Private Ryan. For Americans, the defining moments in World War II are events such as Pearl Harbor and the landing at Normandy Beach on D-Day. For Russia, the epochal struggle of the war was the defense of Stalingrad and the defeat of Nazi German in the battle for this premier Russian city during the winter of 1942-3. It is against this backdrop that Enemy At The Gates is set.

Film making at it's best. - 4 out of 5 (8/30/2001)
One of the rare recent movies that involves your emotions and feelings in it.Whether it is
with the excellent story and script, whether it is with the amazing direction and photography
this is how films should relay true stories.
The direction is remarkable, the acting is at it's best from both Jude Law and Ed Harris.
The score is stunning and the images and colours are mesmerizing. Keeps you anxious
to it's last minutes and does not drag on love stories like "Pearl Harbor" making the scr
