awesome - 3.75 out of 5 (1/29/2000)
this is why i bought a dvd player. i have always wondered what this movie looked like the day it was released, and this is the closest i'll ever get to that. the restored print is phenomenal, the colours are vibrant and the contrasts are just right. the audio near perfect, though the odd drop out here and there. i've seen it on t-v several times, but watching it on dvd, was like watching a brand new movie.

MARIA, TONI, BERNARDO AND THE OTHERS - 4.25 out of 5 (4/1/1999)
At least one scene of WEST SIDE STORY will stay in motion pictures history : Maria and Toni's first encounter in the ballroom. The expression "love at first sight" has never been so delicately transcribed into images. This New-York version of Romeo and Juliet has rather well passed the test of time and we never have the feeling that the dialogs scenes have just been written to fill the gaps between the musical performances.
One could say now, 38 years after the theatrical release of WEST SID

Wow! - 4.5 out of 5 (11/5/1998)

The video and audio quality was critical to make this worthwhile and MGM did an impecable job. My 9 & 10 year olds even loved it. I doubt they would've felt the same with an inferior transfer. Now if they could do this with Sound of Music I'd diea happy man. The only area of improvement would be to include a few more
