Afflicted with a terminal illness, John Bernard Books (John Wayne), the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart). Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boardinghouse run by a widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard). However, it is not Books' fate to die in peace, as he becomes embroiled in one last valiant battle.

..what a great appearance and a wonderful farewell. Highly recommended.

Great farewell movie for the Duke - 4.75 out of 5 (6/11/2003)
What a fitting tribute to one of the greatest western stars of this era. John Wayne plays the dying gunfighter is a thoughtful and subtle way that deserves to be watched over and over again. Sometimes when I watch this movie, I get the feeling the Duke "knew" his time was almost up and wanted to tie up all the loose ends of his long career into a neat package. "The Shootist" does this with stlye. The man who epitomized the American cowboy on a farewell tour.
