Synopsis
This masterpiece by Preston Sturges is perhaps the finest movie-about-a-movie ever made. Hollywood director Joel McCrea, tired of churning out comedies, decides to make O Brother, Where Art Thou - a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering. After his producers point out that he knows nothing of hardship, he hits the road as a hobo. He finds the lovely Veronica Lake - and more trouble than he ever dreamed of.

SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS - 3 out of 5  (11/11/2001)
Preston Sturges was one of the Hollywood Studio-era's most successful and accomplished screenwriters, when he decided to take on directing. In effect, he became the first-ever writer/director, which was most unprecedented. It was even more remarkable when he became so phenomenally successful. From the early-to-mid 1940s, he was on a roll at Paramount, producing a legendary string of classics that were Comedies and then something else that worked at a deeper level or with other genres. great classic - 4.5 out of 5  (8/26/2001)
this movie looks great and the docu on preston sturges is cool. I'm definitely looking forward to the lady eve finally coming out in oct. Joel McCrea is pretty hot with Veronica Lake in this movie. She was so little! I had always thought she was really tall. It's a pretty good story and manages not to be too predictable like older movies tend to be. I always love these criterion discs and this one is one of the best. I feel like I just took a college course about Preston Sturges. Cool commetary   more >>
